A Statement from Mayor Victoria Woodards on Recent Death in South Tacoma

TACOMA, Wash. -- " Earlier  today, Tacoma Police officers responded to a domestic violence call in  South Tacoma. At this time, all we know is that during the response, an  officer

involved shooting occurred. The suspect was declared deceased at  the scene, and no involved officers were injured.

I, like all of you, remain  deeply concerned and devastated by acts of violence in Tacoma. Incidents  like these cause ripples of trauma that affect the families of those  involved, the

neighborhoods surrounding the active scene, our first  responders, and the community at large. It is vital that we address the  root cause of all acts of violence as we work to improve

our  intervention efforts and response to violent incidents. To this end, the  City Council and I will continue to support our domestic violence  prevention and intervention programs to

ensure we are addressing the  issues comprehensively.

Under I-940, Washington State  Law requires that any use of deadly force involving a Police Officer be  investigated by an independent agency. In accordance with these  standards,

the investigation has been turned over to the Pierce County  Force Investigation Team (PCFIT). PCFIT will be responsible for  providing future updates on the investigation.”
