Not only does pet waste contribute to stormwater pollution when it washes into storm drains that lead to Puget Sound, but it also is unsightly—and at times dangerous to pedestrians who may inadvertently step and slip on it.
It has been estimated that a single gram of dog waste can contain as many as 23 million fecal coliform bacteria, which can make humans very ill if digested through swimming, fishing or even wading in affected waters. In addition, dog waste from sidewalks, streets, yards and trails that enters the water supply from runoff can cause algae overgrowth that kills fish and other wildlife.
As the weather warms and more and more of us are heading outside, please be a good neighbor and pick up after your pet. It’s good for our neighborhood streets, sidewalks and waters.
