Most schools in Pierce County Schools Districts began the year with virtual learning, but many also wish to return to in-person learning later this school year.

Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department recently released a report giving to OK for schools to return to in-person learning, Patch reported. But classes will have to be kept small - five children and two adults for kindergarten through fifth grades. Higher grades have yet to receive information on reopening for in-person learning.

Dr. Anthony Chen, Pierce County's director of health, gave guidelines for schools to follow if they choose to open for in-person instruction.

Schools will be considered for reopening if they following the following regulations: the rate of COVID-19 cases is moderate (75 to 25); the percentage of positive cases is less than 5% of those being tested; daily coronavirus case numbers are stable or decreasing; the hospitalization trend of coronavirus cases is stable of decreasing.

"We are in a much better position today than we were in July and August when schools needed to plan for the beginning of the school year," Chen told Patch. "The significant decrease in our case rate is a success to build upon as we continue to work together to drive down this disease in our community."
