***Crime Awareness & Crime Prevention***

Over  the past 48 hours, DPD Officers have responded to several vehicles that  were prowled and one residential burglary – all within the Lapsley  Dr/Hoffman Hill area.  In response, DPD emphasis patrols have been  initiated.

This  morning, just before 4:00 am, a DPD unit was conducting a patrol when a  citizen called 9-1-1 to report a subject who appeared to be trying to  enter unoccupied, parked vehicles in the 3000 block of Hoffman Hill.   The DPD officer and an additional unit from Steilacoom was subsequently  dispatched to the area.  The suspicious subject was located and officers  attempted to contact the individual.  The subject fled and left the  area at a high rate of speed, eluding officer’s attempts to make a  lawful traffic stop.  Immediately thereafter,  a responding DPD unit  located the fleeing vehicle in the area of McNeil and Ridge View Pl.   Continuing his attempts to elude a lawful traffic stop, the suspect  vehicle drove onto the sidewalk in an attempt to maneuver away from the  DPD officer’s vehicle and struck a light pole, disabling the suspect’s  vehicle.  The suspect, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle, fled on  foot. As a part of mutual aid, units from Steilacoom Department of Public Safety, Lakewood WA Police Department, and a tracking K9 from Puyallup Police Department  responded to search for the suspect. Shortly thereafter, the suspect  was located in the area of the incident and safely taken into custody.   The subject is from the Shelton area and had an active Felony Warrant  from the Department of Corrections.  Additional charges for felony  eluding, criminal damage to the light pole, and reckless driving will be  filed with the prosecutor’s office.  (Pictured:  Suspect vehicle after  collision with light pole.)  DPD is conducting follow-up investigations  for possible car prowl charges.

DPD  emphasis patrols will continue.  In the meantime, please ensure your  vehicles are locked, garage doors are shut and all valuables are out of  plain view. All of the vehicle prowls that DPD has responded to over the  last 24 hours have been from unlocked vehicles. In addition, over the  last week, two vehicles have been stolen in our city – both had their  keys in the car.  This is a good reminder as we enter the summer months,  attempted crimes will increase.
